nail infection While most people crave the summer months and enjoy letting their feet ‘air out’ in the open wearing sandals and sporting open-toed shoes when the weather is sunny, some are more self-conscious when it comes to their feet. This maybe because they are suffering from a fungal nail infection. Fungal infections can affect anyone at anytime but build up gradually, manifesting in the form of thick, discoloured and distorted nails. Most commonly found as a toenail infection (rather than a finger nail condition), a nail infection can look unattractive and cause embarrassment. Onychomycosis is the medical term given to a nail infection and can bring about other symptoms, including pain or discomfort, especially when the infected toe or finger is active or having pressure applied to it. Nails may also become brittle and crumbly resulting in fragments breaking off. The symptoms aren’t just limited to nails, with nearby skin occasionally becoming infected, itchy, cracked, swollen or red. We’re glad that you can benefit from our simple and harmless laser treatment that delivers strong pulses of energy from the laser that penetrate through the nail plate and kill the fungus in the nail bed. Your hands, feet and confidence can glow once again!

The majority of nail infections are a product of fungi that triggers athlete’s foot, infecting nails. Though there is fungi normally harmlessly inhabiting the surface of your skin, there’s a chance they can breed and lead to injections. Fungi thrive in warm, dark and moist places like your feet (which is why a nail infection is more common in toenails). Your chances of contracting Onychomycosis are therefore higher if you:

  • don’t keep your feet clean and dry
  • wear shoes that make your feet hot and sweaty
  • go barefoot in places where fungal infections can spread easily, such as communal showers, public locker rooms and gyms
  • have damaged your nails (broken them or trapped your finger or toe inbetween something)
  • have a weak immune system
  • suffer from particular health conditions, for instance diabetes, psoriasis or peripheral arterial disease
